As I’ve mentioned in the earlier post, every weekend Juayua plays hosts to countless visitors, both local and foreign, as it celebrates its acclaimed Fiesta Gastronomica. It is amazing that something like this would take place all year long, weekend after weekend, as opposed to just for a month or two in high season. Yet it does, the food seems to be endless, the quality fantastic and the prices super cheap.
After my adventures of the previous day I looked forward to a relaxed morning and afternoon spent wandering among the countless stalls and mingling with the locals. The preparations had already started on Friday, and my 10am many of the vendors were already setting up shop. By 11:30am the whole thing was in full swing.
Families had come up with their kids; old men were walking around in cowboy hats or else El Salvador hats; kids were riding bicycles; grandmas were sitting in the park munching on the various snacks; people were walking their dogs between the stalls; everyone was pocking their heads into the various stands, tasting the samples and eventually sitting down to the shaded tables to partake in the feast. I was told that you could buy roasted iguana and guinea pig as well as skewered toads. However, despite all my efforts to track down the first two I had to settle for a deliciously prepared frog. My entire meal came out to $7. The bear that went along with it was sold for $1. You could get rabbit for $5, racks of ribs for the same price, or fresh seafood prepared to perfection.
There could not have been a morning better spent.
