Costa Rica: Cost Breakdown

Costa Rica has been billeted as one of the most expensive countries in Central America (along with Belize). As such we were expecting increased costs but found it quite surprising in the end, that food prices were one of the main factors.

Costa Rica – 5 Days$52PPPD
Transportation$32$6
Food$81$16
Accommodations$66$13
Sights$80$16
Miscellaneous$0$0

Note: Costa Rica is relatively expensive when it comes to accommodations, food and activities. Activities tend to start at about $20US and go up from there. Guides to various national reserves charge between $17-25 per person. If you opt for shuttle transportation between the various cities and parks you are looking at a tenfold cost increase as compared to public transportation. We ended up doing a few tours in Monteverede, including the zip-lines, thus bumping up our expenses. However, these proved to be relatively inexpensive as compared to similar activities at home. What was most surprising was the overall cost of food. Eating out is quite pricy and even though we cooked our last two dinners and prepared our own breakfasts and some lunches, the food per day cost ended up being the highest part of our budget.
